At night the outdoor temperature lowers and the wood contracts. This movement creates the popping noise. Popping cracking and snapping sounds coming from their roofs especially when the colder weather hits is a common problem. The sound can be present both in mild weather and heavy winds.

The most common noise issues with flat roofs are banging loud rain snapping popping sounds heat related cracking and creaking. The creaking sound is perfectly normal and is caused by the movement of roof timbers responding to changes in temperature. The wood frame under your roof experiences temperature changes from the outdoor air because the attic does not receive much heating or air conditioning. Banging sounds generally occur when a part of the roof has not been properly fixed in place.

It can ofter sound as if the roof is broken in some way or the roof is going to collapse. The sun hits your roof and heats it up. Creaking wheezing or popping sounds happen at nighttime due to cooler weather.
