There are two types of roof overhangs two consider. A word of caution is necessary here however. You may want one or the other or both. However most jurisdictions also have different views on how much the will allow.

Cornices eaves gutters or other projections from a building or structure may project not over three feet into a required yard but may not extend closer than one foot to any lot line. As an example someone could take advantage of this and build a balcony on the second floor hanging out over the entire setback space.

A gutter overhanging many feet up in the air may be considered by the court as a trivial trespass. A rake overhang is created by extending the roof beyond the gables of your shed. When you have a tree near the property line between your yard and the yard of your neighbor its branches may overhang the adjoining space. Roof overhangs must have a one hour fire protection on the underside when less than 5 from the property line and cannot project closer than 2 from the line.
